Tips to keep your collection file safe

Often times, there are program errors, virus attacks, or hardware failures. And the worst thing can happen is that you lose the information in the collection file completely. To prevent information loss from happening, it is always good to develop a backup habbit.

Windows backup utility is a good choice to do the job. You can find it in Start Menu -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Backup.

If you are using it for the first time, the backup utility will start in wizard mode. Click Next to continue.

Choose "Back up files and settings", click "Next", choose "Let me choose what to back up", click "Next". In the following screen, you'll be prompted to choose files on your computer. Navigate to the directory and choose the collection files by checking the tick box. Click "Next".

Then you need to browse for a directory in which the backup file will be generated. Usually, a MediaMan collection file can't be fitted onto a floppy disk, so the suggested method of storage is as follows:

  • choose a location on another computer if you have one
  • choose a location on a removable compact external storage, such as USB drive
  • choose a temporary location if you plan to burn the files onto your CD-R or DVD-R
  • choose a location on your CD-RW/DVD-RW if your burner supports DVD-RAM, and/or you have similar alternative software technology such as DirectCD set up.

Proceed, and after you hit "Finish", your backup file will be generated.

Before you hit "Finish", there's an "Advanced" button available in the wizard, through which you can setup a schedule for automatic backup process. Remember to use "Replace the existing backups", instead of "Append this backup to the existing backups" setting. This will save you some disk space.
