It's been reported that sometimes, it's difficult to tell which item is selected in the virtual shelf view. Depends on the item picture and Windows color settings, certain items may look identical in selected and deselected states.
In the upcoming update, there will be a change to improve listpane selection style. The new selection style will look like the one presented in the attachment picture. It's basically a glow around the rendering. Please note that it's not a mock-up picture. This effect has already been built into the development release.
When the update becomes available, the color of the glow will be customizable.
I'll need some feedback on whether it's visually pleasant. Use the poll options to choose an appropriate answer. (You need to be registered in this forum in order to vote.)

...maybe you should show the old select style next to it - just to indicate the difference?

How about creating a similar effect as in the dock in OSX--that when you rollover an item it is "magnified"- to help browsing the virtual shelf a tad more easier (and visible)...
