MediaMan (demo) crashing a lot. By: swinky Date: March 09, 2011
I am in the process of testing out various programs such as MediaMan for my mother who is interested in cataloging her very large book collection. I am so far very impressed with MediaMan, but I currently can't recommend it to her due to the fact that this program crashes a LOT. But I like this program enough that I'm willing to troubleshoot the problem.
As is suggested in the help section of the website, I disabled any "Desktop Enhancement Software" that was running, but it still crashes. I also can't check the collection integrity as suggested in the article because pressing alt doesn't do anything.
Currently, I can force a crash simply by changing the view a few times. The window displaying the collection will freeze, and CPU usage will skyrocket (taking 100% of one of my cores.) Very occasionally I'll then get a crash message and the program will quit. Usually, the program will continue to respond for a bit before stopping entirely. Sometimes I can get it to exit gracefully, but usually I have to kill it from the task manager.

Are you running any kinds of desktop enhancement software such as WindowBlinds? Things like that will hook up MediaMan's painting procedure in a hacking and incorrect manner, causing MediaMan to fail constantly. Try turning them off. I saw that you did, however, sometimes this is not enough. It's possible that you need complete uninstallation of such software.
Sometimes a crash may also be caused by anti-virus software and other software running in background. Try turning them off too and uninstall, then reinstall.
There are even some kinds of spyware or browser plugins that tends to hook with every running program.
You can try it out on another computer hopefully with less installed software. I'm sure it'll work flawlessly in freshly installed Windows. Then you can compare software configurations to see if something is interfering.

Not really sure what happened here but I think it's more like OS incompatibility? Can you check if the installer is for 64 or 32 bit?
