3.1 build 1109 really buggy By: Sagorn Date: November 15, 2011
I'm about to ask for my 40 bucks back.
On the surface I was very impressed with the program. I had downloaded it several times over the years and just never got around to using it. I finally decided to purchase, and I find that most of what I want to do is not even working in the latest version.
Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but here are the problems I am encountering after using the program for 2 minutes:
I search for a movie using the IMDB database and it gives me several choices. It tells me to click one to add it. I click and nothing happens. It refuses to add. This has happened with several different movies. I did see an older forum post that mentioned problems with IMDB, but it claimed to be fixed in 3.1. I guess not.
Custom fields... wow. Are you really telling me that I need to add any custom fields that I want for EVERY single item I add to my database? I assume that each "collection" or "category" is its own database table, so why can't I just edit the collection fields for the table so I don't have to add the two custom fields I want EVERY single time I add a new record? This seems like a serious flaw for an application that has had this many updates. I can't see myself manually adding 2 fields every single time I add a record several thousand times.
I hope this is just some newb-ish oversight on my part because this would really be a showstopper for me.

Well I was bored enough to look at the database structure myself and I see now why I am screwed on the custom fields.
Why would you chose to have one main records table instead of breaking the different categories down into different tables to avoid the issue of custom fields having to be added every single record? It should also be easier to create entirely new custom categories. Is there some sort of limitation of the database software I am unaware of?

The IMDb import function is unstable. This is because drastic changes are constantly made to their site. It's not quite possible yet to provide stable retrieval service. I'm sorry it's currently broken. When it happens I'll fix it in the next release, however, it might not be long for it to break again. I'm afraid due to the current situation and limitation, it'll probably stay this way.
Custom fields aren't the way you are going to be happy with, if you are trying to put this info to all items. You'd better use an alternative way. Tagging should be more convenient. There are many features in MediaMan, but not all of them are designed to be extreme. The tagging feature on the other hand, has been proven pretty useful and convenient at the same time. Custom fields will probably stay this way due to the limitation of its own. If you are strictly recording information as "fields", consider putting it to one of the built-in fields available.
Aside from the import problem, which might be difficult to be stable in the long run, organizing problems are easily solved. Try to explore a bit more, I'm sure tagging and folders usually solve all your needs related to cataloging. Lots of people didn't use the Location field because they found tagging to be more convenient. So try and use such ways to reorganize your information.

Version 3.1 is not working for me either; just found another problem with it.
I just notice that every time I click the Save button, no matter if it's in edit mode in the right panel or in the popup window, the Date Imported field decrements by 1 day.
I've been using the Date Imported field to track when I bought an item, and since I edit some of the items more than once, I just lost that piece of information.
I should have stayed in version 2.7x
P.S.: And please, don't tell me to use tags... that seems to be your response for everything.

As an update to the IMDB issue, the issue I was (am) having doesn't seem to be with it not finding the proper data from IMDB, but adding it to Mediaman.
As an example, if I search for a movie, and there happens to be more than 1 possible choice, it won't let me click the correct one to add. I click, and nothing happens. If I do another search and add more detailed information in my search, which is commonly the year, it only returns the one record and adds it. Now, I have had problems with IMDB just returning garbage on a search, (which I know isn't a Mediaman problem) but there are cases where it returns data just fine, but I can't "click" to add it.

Hi Sagorn, it's been quite a while already. Any updates yet if you were able to find a good work around on this?
