Dewey Decimal Classification & labels By: Dr. Phil Date: March 13, 2005
Does anybody have any experience using Dewey Decimal Classification with MediaMan?  I would like to classify my books with Dewey Decimal so I can also sort them in my book shelfes as well as label them accordingly.
Anybody any idea?
Thank you
Phil
Dewey Decimal Classification & labels By: He.Shiming Date: March 13, 2005
Well, MediaMan isn't aware of the DDC system. However, as long as the DDC system allows you to organize by a category tree and a list of items, I think you'll have no trouble implementing it in MediaMan.

You can start by creating a sub-category under "Books", name it "000 Computers" if you will. Then, if you have more specific categories, proceed to create them. MediaMan supports unlimited nested categories which is similar to the decimal mechanisms provided by DDC. And then you get to import items in those categories.

Although if I had enough information on the application of DDC system, I would be happy to include its mechanism as one of the built-in features of the program.

The following is the, as far a I know, official classification of DDC:
A also have an extended one of DDC (the 200 classification) for theological books.  I will be sending these classificaions to you at a later date.  Presently it does not let me copy them.
Thank you.

DDC & labels By: Dr. Phil Date: March 13, 2005
In the attached Adobe file please find the DDC classification in which I am mostly interested and which would be the most helpful to me and to many others.  Especially to my / our students who are already using MediaMan for their personal library.

Dewey Decimal Classification & labels By: He.Shiming Date: March 14, 2005
Hi Dr. Phil,

Thank you for the information. And do you think that there should be a DDC field, in which, MediaMan will populate the categories? In any case, currently, you can create a DDC custom field in every item to hold this information, while I'm developing a sorting on custom fields feature, which will be helpful to the DDC organization system.
DDC & labels By: Dr. Phil Date: March 14, 2005
Hi Shiming,
I am convinced, that the DDC - System is one of the best for students and faculty members to   sorte their personal books and other resources.  Using MediaMan is practical and helpful, but as it presently stands, it does not help me to sort my bookshelf to actually find the book which MediaMan shows me.  If you like, we could run a phase of tryal with the theological books, and after some time I give you a feedback on how helpful it is etc.
Of course, we then should be able to print labels with the DDC numbers.  These labels need to be modifiable for the individuale user for the Author name or some other further calssifications.  This because some books have the same title and will therefor be assigned the same DDC nummber.

Hi Dr. Phil,

I have now recorded down the "DDC support feature" in the wish list. And soon I'll be working on it, as well as the printing feature. Hopefully, MediaMan will provide better support for this organization system in the future.

And I would love to see your feedback of your trial as well as further suggestions. I appreciate your effort to support this program.  Smiley

Square Peg, Round Hole? By: MrC Date: March 15, 2005
Just came across mediaman via lockergnome, ain't downloaded it yet (but will be), then saw this post and had to fire off quick reply. I was a librarian. I'm now a business analyst for librarys, developing software (i.e. I elicit/spec requirements). So, i have "some history" here! ;-)

My gut reaction to this thread on DDC is BE CAREFUL. Not enough time for massive post but:

- DDC will work for you if you are classifying non-fiction works (e.g. educational DVDs, theological books). Anything else, I wouldn't bother as you are probably going to end up with only several numbers (check in your library catalogue - all fiction - ALL of it - has same DDC number. Audio-visual material uses categories).

- What are you trying to achieve? Is it purely shelf order for finding or are you trying to group the content so similar content together? If the latter, there may be better schemes (LC may have more use to you than DC).

- How many items have you got on the shelf? If 1000 or less, I'd be looking at your own groupings/orderings, especially of you are the only one using it. If more than that, a simple classification scheme may work.

- DDC ain't simple. Crudely put, what people have mailed previously are the chapter headings. The schedules (which you need to assign Dewey numbers) are 4 volumes, 20,000+ pages (small print!). It can take someone experienced 15 mins to assign a single classification.

- DDC will only work at the high level headings for you if you have a broad collection coverage. If you're talking just theology, you're gonna want to get down to a good few decimal points to provide approproaite disassociation for locating.

- In summary (to the developer), just because a user WANTS something doesn't mean they NEED something. Why support DDC and not LC? How about users who have own shcemes (equally valid). All the rqmt is at this point is "To support user classification schemes for accurate shelf retrieval". If you want an extensible solution, tie down the business requirement first, define the problem as faced by the entire community in all scenarios.

- In summary (to He. Shimming) - good on you. Sorry if sounded negative - you are definately on the right track. I'm fairly sure there are specific theological classification schemes out there - browse the net, go to your local library school and talk to the classification lecturer (they'd love to help), get the right scheme for your collection to meet your and your users needs (means understanding what everyone using you collection needs are too!). If you are set on DDC, unless you get some training, and can afford to buy the schedules, the best bet is to find some union/local catalogue whose collection matches yours where they have used DDC. Nick their numbers! Hope this helps, and hasn't offended anyone.

Thank you MrC for the comment. Of course I've been taking ease of use as one of the design objective. I'll first evaluate if a feature should be useful as well as easy to use before scheduling it for development.

MediaMan is a home inventory manager. It's not designed to organize a library of books. So if it were to support some of the industrial-standard organization methods, it would be probably oriented at the ease of use, practicality rather than the standard itself, or powerfulness. So after all, I have to think about it, and hopefully to carry out a solution.

Thank you both for the information.  Smiley
DDC & labels By: Dr. Phil Date: March 19, 2005
I have found that pastors, theological faculty members and missiologist work with DDC in their personal libraries and in educational institutions on several continents.
I even could envision working togehter, as a summary for the books and their classification, with "pastors lirary".  They did already a good job but up to now do not have it electronically.
